Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Rococo style, originating in France in the early 18th century, is characterised by asymmetrical compositions, serpentine curves, acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, and elaborate gilding. It emphasized lightness, elegance, and naturalistic motifs over the heavy symmetry of the preceding Baroque period.

Traditional giltwood brackets were constructed from carved softwoods, such as pine or lime wood, coated in gesso and clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then water-gilded or oil-gilded onto the surface, often combined with mercury-backed glass panels.

Authentic period giltwood typically displays natural wear to the gold leaf, revealing reddish or grey clay bole beneath. Modern reproductions often use composition metal leaf or metallic paint, which lack the depth, subtle oxidisation, and hand-carved tool marks of original pieces.

A mirrored giltwood wall bracket provides architectural interest when hung in a narrow hallway, alcove, or powder room. It serves as a focal point to display small porcelain objects, candles, or miniature sculptures, reflecting light into smaller areas.

Giltwood surfaces should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve water gilding. Mirrored glass should be cleaned by applying mirror cleaner sparingly to a cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass.
