Vintage Cabochon Amethyst Ring in Substantial 9ct Gold 7.8g Hallmarked 1966 Size T 1/2

1940 - 1960
Description

Vintage 1966 Cabochon Amethyst Ring in 9ct Gold

A striking vintage cabochon amethyst ring, crafted in substantial 9ct yellow gold and fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1966.

The ring is set with an impressive oval cabochon amethyst measuring approximately 12.3mm by 9mm. The beautifully domed stone displays a rich, saturated purple colour, enlivened by flashes of violet and subtle blue as it catches the light.

Smoothly collet set, the amethyst is framed by a simple polished gold border and broad, gently tapering shoulders. The understated design allows the exceptional colour and softly rounded form of the gemstone to remain the focal point.

Measuring approximately 14.5mm across the top and rising 9mm above the finger, the ring has a bold yet beautifully balanced appearance. Its generous 7.8-gram weight gives it a pleasingly substantial feel, while its signet-inspired form makes it suitable for either a lady or gentleman.

The ring bears a complete Birmingham hallmark for 1966, together with the maker’s initials BCH. A wonderfully wearable example of mid-century British jewellery, it would make a distinctive statement ring or an especially thoughtful February birthstone gift.

It is in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cabochon gemstone rings feature smooth, polished stones with convex upper surfaces rather than faceted cuts. This ancient gemstone cutting style regained significant popularity during the mid-twentieth century, often integrated into heavy gold bands and signet-style settings for a clean, sculptural aesthetic.

Mid-century British jewellery commonly utilised solid 9ct yellow gold for durability, alongside natural quartz gemstones such as amethyst. The gemstones were frequently secured using robust bezel settings, where a rim of metal surrounds the perimeter of the stone.

Authentic British gold pieces feature official assay office hallmarks stamped into the metal. These hallmarks include symbols indicating the purity of the metal (such as 375 for 9ct gold), the assay office mark, a makers mark, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of manufacture.

When not being worn, vintage gold rings can be styled within a modern dressing room or bedroom interior by displaying them atop marble trinket trays, velvet jewellery dishes, or under small glass cloches on a vanity table.

Clean the ring gently using warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft-bristled brush to remove dust around the stone setting. Avoid exposure to harsh household chemicals, perfumes, or sudden temperature changes, which can damage natural gemstones over time.
