Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in England during the early 18th century, the Windsor chair developed as a sturdy, vernacular seating form widely produced in rural workshops, particularly around Buckinghamshire. Named after the town of Windsor, which served as the trade hub between rural makers and London buyers, these chairs are defined by turned legs and back spindles mortised directly into a solid wooden seat.

Traditional Windsor chairs were constructed using native English timbers, often combining distinct woods for different components based on strength and flexibility. Seats were typically carved from thick slabs of elm, while back hoops and spindles were steam-bent from ash, fruitwood, or yew, all secured using wedged mortise and tenon joints without mechanical fasteners.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-carved construction, including asymmetrical tool marks on the underside of the saddle seat, hand-turned legs, and wedged tenon joints visible on top of the seat board. Natural wear patterns, subtle shrinkage of timber over centuries, and deep patination around high-touch areas like the armrests also indicate age.

A traditional Windsor armchair serves as a sculptural accent piece when placed alongside contemporary minimalist furniture or within a reading corner. The warmth of the aged timber contrasts effectively against crisp modern plaster walls, stone fireplaces, or paired with contemporary linen textiles.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and sudden atmospheric humidity changes to prevent structural timber shrinkage or cracking.
