Originating in England during the early 18th century, the Windsor chair developed as a sturdy, vernacular seating form widely produced in rural workshops, particularly around Buckinghamshire. Named after the town of Windsor, which served as the trade hub between rural makers and London buyers, these chairs are defined by turned legs and back spindles mortised directly into a solid wooden seat.

Traditional Windsor chairs were constructed using native English timbers, often combining distinct woods for different components based on strength and flexibility.
