Description

Christine Nesbit (American 1902-1990) Superb Oil and Impasto Portrait Painting

Brief Description:

This is a large and exceptional Impressionist Oil and Impasto on Canvas entitled Wanderers in Time, painted by the highly regarded American artist Christine Nesbit (1902–1990).

Created circa 1960–1965, this remarkable composition depicts three enigmatic, surreal figures gathered beside a sandy outcrop, set within a dreamlike landscape. Nisbet's distinctive style combines expressive impasto with a subtle, muted palette, creating a hauntingly atmospheric work that invites contemplation and interpretation.

The painting is an outstanding example of the artist's mature period and is quite possibly one of her finest works. Its powerful composition, beautifully balanced forms and richly textured surface exemplify the qualities for which Nisbet's paintings are admired.

The work is presented in its impressive original two-tone moulded gallery frame, which complements the painting perfectly and enhances its commanding presence.

Signed 'Nisbet' in the lower right corner.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century modernist figurative art emerged in the mid-20th century, combining stylised human forms with expressive textures and simplified background compositions. Artists often employed techniques like impasto alongside soft, muted colour palettes to evoke emotional depth rather than precise realism.

Artists typically applied thick layers of oil paint onto stretched canvas or wooden panels using palette knives and stiff bristle brushes. Frames from this period frequently featured layered wooden mouldings finished in soft cream, beige, or grey tones to complement the artwork.

Authentic works from this period display age-appropriate oxidation on the reverse of the panel or canvas, natural paint craquelure, and period-correct artist signatures. Examining framing hardware, construction methods, and gallery labels on the back can also confirm period origin.

Position the painting as a focal point above a wooden credenza, sideboard, or mantelpiece where ambient light highlights the impasto texture. Pair the piece with clean-lined contemporary furniture or warm timber accents to balance the sculptural quality of the artwork.

Keep textured paintings away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent paint cracking or fading. Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding cloths or liquid cleaning agents that could snag on raised impasto paint.
