Mid-19th-century Neoclassical Bust of Erato One of the Nine Muses in Greek Mythology

19th century
Description

Mid-19th-century Neoclassical bust of Erato one of the Nine Muses in Greek mythology

Other 19th-century Neoclassical female busts with similar hair treatment, drapery, and symbolic attributes appear in auction records and museum collections. These comparables consistently date to the mid–late 19th century.

Erato is one of the Nine Muses in Greek mythology — specifically the Muse of lyric poetry, love poetry, and erotic verse. Her name comes from the same root as eros, meaning love or desire, which is why she’s associated with themes of romance, beauty and emotional expression.

Who was Erato

A daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory). Patron of lyric poets, especially those writing about love. Symbolised by the lyre, sometimes by roses or myrtle.

Often depicted as gentle, contemplative, and idealised — Exactly the qualities reflected in many Neoclassical busts.

69 cm high with a 90cm pedestal.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical sculpture from this era drew heavy inspiration from classical Greco-Roman art, featuring idealised human forms, smooth surfaces, controlled emotional expression, and subjects drawn from ancient mythology or history.

Sculptors primarily worked with high-grade white statuary marble, such as Carrara, though plaster models and bronze casts were also produced for preparatory studies and commercial reproduction.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit fine hand-chiselled detailing, natural surface patination or subtle discolouration from age, trace tool marks on non-visible undersides, and integrated marble bases or socles.

A classical marble bust functions as a structural focal point when placed atop a dark wood sideboard, inside a modern bookshelf, or centered on a fireplace mantelpiece against a neutral wall background.

Dust marble periodically with a soft, clean brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid acidic chemicals, abrasive soaps, and excess moisture, which can degrade the stone surface and disrupt its natural patina over time.
