Victorian Walker & Hall Silver Plated Tantalus

19th century
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This Victorian Walker & Hall Silver Plated Tantalus would make a very stylish addition to any dining or drawing room. The three highly decorative glass decanters sit in the trefoil arranged carrying tray.

The sparkling and highly decorative glass, works so well with the detailed silver-plated metalwork. The beautifully cut decanters topped with their generous tear drop shaped stoppers are sure to display any beverage to their very best.

The tray is finely pierced and stands on delightful claw feet, also having a generous carrying handle that itself is intricately decorated. Fully stamped to the underside with the Walker & Hall motif and displaying the letter ‘R’ for 1885. Being made by such an admired maker, this set always was, and always will be, a quality item.

Just one thing to note, as shown in the accompanying images there are a few areas that have rubbed through the silver plate where the decanters stand in the tray, and a small area of rub through to the top of the decanter holding ring.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian decanter stand or tantalus is a framed tabletop holder designed to hold glass decanters securely for serving spirits and wine. Originating in the nineteenth century, these items range from open metal stands with handles to lockable wooden cabinets designed to prevent unauthorized access to liquor.

Victorian decanter stands were constructed using silver plate, electroplated nickel silver, or sterling silver, alongside solid timber frames such as oak, mahogany, and walnut. The decanters themselves were crafted from heavy lead crystal, often decorated with diamond cutting, fluting, or facet-cut stoppers.

Authentic pieces usually feature manufacturer makers marks, stamped serial numbers, or maker logos on the underside of the base or along the rim. Look for hand-cut crystal decanters with matching numbers scratched onto both the stopper stem and decanter neck to verify original pairing, along with natural wear on foot rims.

Place the decanter stand on a dining room sideboard, drinks trolley, or executive desk to create a focal point. Contrast the reflective silver and cut glass against dark wood, marble counters, or contemporary matte surfaces to bridge traditional barware with modern decor.

Clean the silver-plated frame using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to remove tarnish and prevent plating erosion. Wash the crystal decanters by hand with lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding dishwasher use to protect the lead glass from clouding and temperature shock.
