Large Victorian Mahogany Chippendale Revival Triptych Overmantel Mirror with Ho-ho Bird Cresting

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A large Victorian mahogany overmantel mirror in the Chippendale Revival taste, retaining three bevelled mirror plates within parcel-gilt slips and an elaborate pierced cresting decorated with ho-ho birds, scrolling foliage and pierced fretwork.

The rectangular frame is surmounted by a finely carved open pediment centred with a pair of opposing ho-ho birds amidst foliate scrolls and flanked by pierced gilt rosettes. The three original bevelled mirror plates are divided by slender mahogany uprights with gilt mouldings, creating a balanced architectural design typical of high-quality late Victorian cabinet making inspired by eighteenth-century Chippendale furniture.

The rich mahogany frame combined with restrained parcel gilt decoration gives the mirror an elegant appearance, making it equally suited to a period interior or as a statement piece in a more contemporary setting. The generous proportions and triptych arrangement provide a broad reflective surface whilst retaining a lighter visual appearance than a single large mirror.

A decorative Victorian overmantel mirror of good quality and impressive scale.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 84 cm

Width: 117 cm

Depth: 10 cm

CONDITION

The frame displays the expected minor marks, knocks and wear commensurate with age and use. There are some small losses to the carved and pierced mouldings, principally towards the upper left-hand side. The parcel gilt decoration has mellowed attractively over time with minor rubbing in places. The bevelled mirror plates have light age-related foxing and slight clouding but remain clear and entirely usable. Overall the mirror is structurally sound and presents very well.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale Revival overmantel mirrors are late 19th-century wall mirrors created in the style of 18th-century cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, featuring carved fretwork, rococo scroll accents, and decorative cresting.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine frames, enhanced with hand-carved pierced details, gilt highlights, and mirrored glass plates.

Look for hand-carved mahogany fretwork, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, aged backboards, and hand-applied gilding on motifs such as ho-ho birds or acanthus leaves.

Position the mirror directly above a living room chimneypiece, a dining room sideboard, or a grand hallway console table to reflect light and anchor the rooms proportions.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to raw mahogany areas, and avoid moisture or chemical spray cleaners near gilded sections.
