Large 19th Century Portuguese Rosewood Extending Dining Table

1900 - 1920
Description

Large 19th Century Portuguese Rosewood Extending Dining Table

A substantial late 19th-century Portuguese rosewood extending dining table, having a beautifully figured rectangular top bordered by a boldly carved gadrooned edge. The table is supplied with two additional leaves, allowing it to be adjusted in length for everyday use or larger gatherings. The top displays some slight movement between the individual sections, consistent with the natural character and age of the timber.

The deep frieze is decorated with geometric moulded panels and a finely carved lower edge. It stands on four impressive barley-twist legs with boldly turned upper sections and block details, united by shaped stretchers and a panelled central support. The rich rosewood has a deep, warm colour with attractive natural figuring throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Portuguese dining tables from the 19th century often combine traditional Iberian joinery with influences from Baroque and Renaissance Revival styles, featuring heavy stretchers, turned columns, and detailed relief carving.

These tables were typically crafted from dense tropical hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany, incorporating hand-carved spiral legs, sturdy H-stretchers, and wood-runner extension mechanisms.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate runner tracks under the tabletop, natural grain variations, and original hand-carved details along the legs and frieze.

Pair dark rosewood tables with clean-lined modern chairs and understated lighting to allow the rich wood grain and decorative leg turnings to serve as the focal point of the dining room.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and applying a quality beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish.
