Late 19th Century Boxwood and Ebonised Staunton Chess Set

Description

A characterful late 19th-century Staunton pattern chess set, comprising a complete complement of thirty-two turned boxwood and ebonised wooden pieces. The set features substantial kings and queens with carved coronets, mitred bishops, finely carved horse-head knights, castellated rooks and traditionally turned pawns. Each piece is finished with green baize to the underside.

The set is accompanied by its original oak storage box with hinged lid and brass hook fastening. The pieces have developed an attractive mellow colour and surface patina, with expected signs of age and use.

Late 19th-century sets were typically lathe-turned from boxwood, with one set left in its natural light timber tone and the opposing side ebonised using dark dye or lacquer, often completed with felt baize bases.
