Rare Georgian Swansea Pearlware Botanical Sauce Tureen C.1810

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A superb Swansea pearlware sauce or cream tureen, finely painted in enamels with botanical specimens in the style of Thomas Pardoe, inspired by the botanical prints engraved by William Curtis in the 18th century. The base has "Venus's Looking Glass" on one side and "Purple Headed Garlick" on the other. The cover has "Tree Flax" and "Peruvian Turn Sole". Shaped side handles and scrolled knop to the cover, all picked out in brown enamel along with the rims. The specimens are named on the underside of both pieces in red script. c.1810.

Provenance: Sotheby's "The Glory Of The Garden" exhibition, a loan exhibition held in association with The Royal Horticultural Society, held between 2 and 28 January 1987, exhibit number 111/2.

It measures 19cm (7 1/2") long, 10.8cm (4 1/4") wide and 14.2cm (5 5/8") high with cover on (8.2cm (3 1/4") height of tureen alone).

Condition is excellent with a few small chips to the vertical flange inside the cover and a couple of fleabites to the underside of the rim of the base. Some light crazing to the shoulders of the tureen. Minimal handling wear, the enamel is in excellent condition, just some expected light wear to the knop.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Swansea pearlware refers to ceramic items produced at the Cambrian Pottery in Swansea, Wales, during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Pearlware features a refined earthenware body coated in a clear glaze mixed with cobalt oxide, giving it a distinctive pale blue cast in crevices.

Pearlware tureens were crafted using white earthenware clay mixed with flint. The pieces were fired, coated in a lead glaze tinted with cobalt oxide, and decorated using hand-applied enamel paints for botanical and floral illustrations.

Authentic Georgian pearlware displays a light bluish tint where the glaze pools in underside rims and around handles. Additionally, hand-painted enamel details show subtle brush strokes, and pieces may feature impressed manufacturer marks or painter numbers on the base.

A botanical tureen functions as a decorative focal point when placed on a sideboard top, kitchen dresser, or inside a glazed display cabinet. It pairs well with traditional timber surfaces, neutral linen tablecloths, and contemporary botanical prints.

Care for antique ceramics requires hand washing with warm water and mild dish detergent using a soft cloth. Dishwashers and abrasive sponges should be avoided to prevent damage to delicate overglaze enamels and decoration.
