18th C Mahogany Moon Dial Longcase Clock Grandfather Clock

18th century
For Sale by Cross Antiques
Description

A handsome 18th C Mahogany long case by John Clayton, Marple, Cheshire.

The case is in nicely figured solid mahogany with a long slim door and arched top hood with eagle finials.

The good quality 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell. It has a smart brass dial with gilt spandrels and a silvered chapter ring. To the arch is a very attractive moon phase indicator with the moon on a starry background. It has a good pair of brass cased weights.

The case is a unrestored condition and is showing some signs of it's age. There are age related shrinkage cracks and knocks. There are repairs where the door hinges are attached to the trunk. However the condition is reflected in the price.

The movement is in running order and keeping good time.

Collection preferred but national and international delivery arranged at cost.

This clock is offered as a trade sale without warranty at a very attractive price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian longcase clocks typically feature solid or veneered mahogany cases, brass dials with silvered chapter rings, and arched hoods often topped with carved or cast brass finials.

These timepieces were constructed using solid and veneered hardwoods, predominantly mahogany or oak, housing brass and iron mechanical clock movements behind glass aperture panels.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the integration between the movement and the seatboard, original dial engravings, hand-cut movement gears, and age-appropriate oxidisation on metal elements.

Positioning a longcase clock in an entryway, hallway, or dining room creates a distinct architectural anchor that complements both classic and modern transitional decor schemes.

Keep the timber case away from direct sunlight and radiators, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply beeswax sparingly, and have the mechanical movement lubricated by a specialist every five years.
