French Pair Giltwood Twin Arm Girandoles

Description

A French pair of giltwood and toleware twin arm mirrored girandoles, the metal leaf scrolling arms with scalloped leaf candle sconces, issuing from an elaborate giltwood mirror backplate with pierced carved ribbon finial, nice original patination and good large scale with original glass panels. Fully rewired and PAT tested. All our wall lights come with aged brass screws for fixing and spare bulbs.

A girandole is a decorative wall light or candelabra fitted with a small central mirror or reflective plate designed to amplify and bounce light into the room. Originating in France during the seventeenth century, these fixtures combine functional illumination with ornamental gilding and reflective mirrorwork.

Traditional girandoles feature hand-carved wood frames coated in gesso and finished with thin layers of gold leaf applied via water gilding or oil gilding techniques. The central mirror plate is typically made from blown glass, while internal arm armatures use wrought iron or cast brass to support candle holders or electrical wiring.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carving marks on the rear timber frame, reddish-clay bole showing through worn gilded highlights, and natural oxidisation on original iron fixtures.
