19th century
Description

Antique Gothic Revival Brass Three-Light Gasolier with Opalescent Glass Shades

The gasolier retains an attractive aged patina and comes with three impressive hand-blown opalescent glass shades of softly crimped bell form, each with a delicate iridescent sheen.

Dimensions:

Width: 75 cm

Height (drop, excluding chain): 75 cm

Each shade: width 21 cm × height 18 cm × aperture 9 cm

Condition:

Brass frame with age related tarnish and some little distortion to shape. One lamp holder missing; requires rewiring before use. The opalescent shades of particularly fine quality, one with chip to bottom.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Gothic Revival gasolier is a ceiling-mounted lighting fixture produced during the nineteenth century, incorporating architectural details such as pointed arches, quatrefoils, and trefoils while operating on municipal gas.

Victorian gasoliers were constructed from cast or spun brass, often finished with lacquer or dark patination, and fitted with blown glass shades such as frosted, etched, or opalescent varieties.

Authentic gasoliers display hollow arm tubing intended for gas flow, integrated tap valves near the burner nozzles, historical wear or surface oxidisation, and structural mounting hardware distinct from modern electrical fittings.

A Gothic Revival light fixture functions as a focal point when suspended above a dining table, entryway, or library desk, balancing structured modern furnishings with Victorian architectural detail.

Brass framework should be dusted gently with a dry, soft cloth to maintain its aged patina without chemical cleaners, while removable glass shades can be washed in warm water with mild soap.
