Art Deco Longcase Clock – For Restoration – Chrome Dial & Triple Weight Movement

1900 - 1920
Description

Art Deco Longcase Clock – For Restoration – Chrome Dial & Triple Weight Movement

An elegant early 20th century Art Deco longcase clock, offered as a complete project for restoration.

Description:

The case is of tall, slim, and rounded architectural form with carved Art Deco detailing, veneered in dark-stained oak or similar hardwood.

The clock retains its original chrome-plated Arabic numeral dial, which is heavily oxidised and discoloured, consistent with age and long storage.

The movement is an 8-day triple-weight chiming movement with visible strike mechanisms. It appears complete but untested.

Comes with:

Original brass movement

Three chrome cylindrical weights

Pendulum rod and bob

Chrome Arabic numeral dial

Original winding key

Internal paper instructions label still present to inner case.

Condition:

Being sold as found for restoration or parts.

The case is structurally sound and retains its glass, though general surface wear and age marks are present.

The dial is tarnished and shows patches of corrosion.

The movement is untested and may require a full service.

Chrome on weights and pendulum bob is generally bright with some signs of ageing.

Dimensions:

Height approx. 183 cm (72 in)

Width approx. 33 cm

Depth approx. 24 cm

This is a stylish interwar-period longcase clock with potential as a rewarding restoration project. No maker’s mark visible, but likely of English or possibly German origin, c. 1930s–40s.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco longcase clocks produced during the 1920s and 1930s typically display geometric proportions, streamlined silhouettes, and simplified moulding compared to Victorian predecessors. They often feature chrome-plated dials, bold modernist numerals, and oak or walnut cabinetry with stylized carved accents.

The cabinets are commonly crafted from solid oak, walnut, or mahogany, sometimes utilizing decorative veneers. Internal mechanical components comprise brass clockworks, steel cables or chains, chrome-plated drive weights, and glass viewing panels.

Authentic pieces display period-correct design features such as geometric sunburst or fan carvings, circular chrome or silvered dials with stylized numerals, and a domed or stepped hood profile. Checking for original brass movements and original weight assemblies also helps verify period authenticity.

A longcase clock serves as a strong architectural focal point in an entryway, dining area, or stair landing. Pairing the dark timber frame against neutral modern wall paint highlights the geometric lines and chrome detailing of the piece.

The wooden case should be kept away from direct heat sources and treated with natural beeswax to preserve the timber finish. Mechanical movements require periodic professional cleaning and re-oiling every five to seven years to ensure accuracy and prevent gear wear.
