18th Century Georgian Oak Lowboy Side Table

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An attractive 18th-century Georgian oak lowboy of pleasing proportions.

The moulded two-plank top sits above a long drawer over two smaller drawers, all with cock-beaded edges and retaining brass plate handles. The base has a shaped apron with shaped corner brackets and stands on square tapering legs.

The lowboy has developed a rich colour and patina through age and use, making it an attractive and practical piece that make it particularly suitable as a console table, lamp table or hall table.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 78cm

Width: 97cm

Depth: 51cm

CONDITION

The lowboy is in good, solid condition and presents well overall. There are light marks, knocks and scratches consistent with its age and use.

There is a small loss to the lower edge of the front left corner bracket together with minor historic strengthening repairs to the drawer bottoms and the tip of the rear right foot. The original lock is no longer present and the escutcheon opening has been neatly filled.

The drawers run freely, all joints are solid and the piece retains an attractive colour and patina. The brass handles appear to be original.

Overall, this is a well-proportioned eighteenth-century oak lowboy with honest signs of age and use.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is a small chest or table with drawers, prominent in 18th-century British design, primarily utilised as a dressing table or side table in period interiors.

These tables were commonly crafted from solid English oak or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed wood surfaces, uneven drawer linings, period-correct brass escutcheons, and natural timber shrinkage or oxidation beneath.

A Georgian lowboy functions well as an occasional hall table in entryways, suited to being paired with contemporary abstract artwork or minimalist lighting.

Maintain the patinated finish by applying natural beeswax polish periodically and positioning the piece away from direct heat sources to avoid timber movement.
