Description

A nice quality unusual American solid sterling silver caddy spoon or bonbon spoon. It is hallmarked STERLING along with the makers marks of Arthur Stone of Gardner Massachusetts (1907-1937). I would date it to c1910-1920. It has a very broad bowl and handle engraved SMcL. It is in super condition being free from dings splits distortions and repairs. It measures approx. 4.5 inches (11cms) long by almost 2 inches (4.7cm) wide and weighs 23 grams. A very nice example.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A caddy spoon is a small, specialized utensil designed to scoop loose leaf tea from a tea caddy into a teapot. They became popular in the late eighteenth century when tea was an expensive commodity stored in locked wooden or metal caddies.

While solid sterling silver was the most popular material, caddy spoons were also crafted from silver plate, mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell, horn, bone, and brass, often featuring shell or shovel-shaped bowls.

Authentic pieces generally display hallmarks or makers marks indicating the purity of the metal, the maker, and the town or date of production. Weight, construction methods, and period-appropriate hand engraving or monogramming also help determine authenticity.

Small silverware items like caddy spoons can be displayed on a dining room sideboard top, arranged inside glass-topped shadow boxes, or integrated into modern tea tray styling alongside contemporary ceramic accessories.

Sterling silver should be washed gently in warm soapy water, rinsed, and dried thoroughly with a soft cloth. Regular handling and occasional cleaning with a specialized silver polishing cloth prevent natural oxidisation and tarnish build-up.
