Fine Regency Ebonised Trafalgar Sabre Leg Side Chair with Original Cane Seat, C.1815

19th century
Description

An elegant and highly authentic early 19th-century Regency period ebonised side chair, dating to circa 1815. This fine accent chair is an excellent example of design from the late Georgian era, featuring the iconic Trafalgar-style bar-back frame.

The back frame features a finely turned spindle top rail over a central horizontal splat, which is beautifully embellished with a detailed, original applied cast-brass foliate mount. The upright stiles are further enhanced by four inset brass decorative roundels. The chair boasts gracefully out-curved front sabre legs and swept rear legs, a classic hallmark of the Regency period that provides a striking silhouette.

Importantly, the chair retains its highly desirable, original hand-woven natural cane seat which has aged to a rich, honey-toned patina that beautifully contrasts against the ebonised seat frame. The cane seat is original and delicate, showing minor historic sagging and a few broken strands.

The frame is structurally sound, stable, and retains its authentic ebonised finish with minor, age-appropriate, wear that highlights its 200-year history.

Due to the delicate nature of the rare, surviving original cane work, this piece is recommended for decorative display use only or as an accent chair for a bedroom, hallway, or drawing room.

Overall dimensions in cm: 49W x 53D x 82H

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named to commemorate naval history during the early 19th century, Trafalgar chairs typically feature sweeping sabre legs, curved stiles, and decorated back splats characteristic of British Regency design.

Regency chairs were crafted from hardwoods such as beech or fruitwood, finished with an ebonised dark stain to simulate ebony, and fitted with woven cane seats and brass metalware.

Authentic Regency seating exhibits period-appropriate hand joinery, swept sabre leg profiles, natural wear to the underlying timber, and original patination on ebonised surfaces.

An ebonised Regency chair serves as an accent piece alongside contemporary desks, positioned in a hallway alcove, or paired with minimalist furniture to provide historical contrast.

Woven cane seating should be kept away from direct heat sources to prevent drying out, and can be lightly misted with water on the underside to maintain strand elasticity.
