Taxidermy – Short Eared Owl by Hutchings of Aberystwyth

19th century
Description

Taxidermy – Short Eared Owl by Hutchings of Aberystwyth.

Circa 1890.

Totally original retaining its original gilt slip and glass. The bird is in remarkable condition and the case appears to be un opened. The ebonised case is glazed just to the front (not the sides) and the gilt beading from my experience is an earlier type, suggesting this maybe by James Huthchings the father. As is often the norm with this famous firm, there is no trade label.

To the underside of the case is a pencil inscription, however it is very faint and I have been unable to read it. I think it’s the owl’s details, where taken, owner and date etc, but I cannot say for sure.

Fresh to the market, from a house clearance in North Wales.

53cm High x 36cm Wide.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian cased taxidermy refers to the practice of preserving bird and animal specimens within sealed glass-fronted wooden cases, popularised in the 19th century as natural history displays for private collections and cabinets of curiosities.

Traditional cases were constructed using timber frames, glass panels, painted card or canvas backdrops, and internal groundwork formed from plaster, dried moss, grasses, and papier-mache.

Authentic Victorian pieces typically feature glass eyes, wood and plaster ground, period-correct framing moulding, hand-painted backgrounds, and sometimes original trade labels from Victorian taxidermy firms affixed inside or on the reverse.

Cased taxidermy is frequently displayed on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or sideboards within eclectic, traditional, or dark academia interiors to add visual texture and historical character.

Keep cases out of direct sunlight and away from damp or fluctuating temperatures, inspect periodically for signs of pest activity, and dust the exterior glass gently without disturbing internal seals.
