108 X 164cm Mid 19th Century Konya Prayer Rug

19th century
Description

I love the simplicity of this very old rug, and the beautiful, soft colours all derived from natural sources. The empty field of the coral coloured niche balances beautifully with the ochre background within a similar border. Ancient symbols prowl through the border in this most stimulating and unusual tribal rug.

3'6" x 5'4"

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Konya prayer rugs originate from Central Anatolia in Turkey, traditionally woven by village weavers featuring a distinct architectural niche design known as a mihrab.

Traditional Anatolian rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and foundation, coloured with vegetable and organic dyes.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display natural dye variations known as abrash, hand-bound selvedges, slight geometric asymmetry, and soft wool construction woven on wool foundations.

Anatolian rugs act as focal textile elements when placed on timber flooring, layered over larger neutral jute carpets, or mounted as wall hangings.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, clean liquid spills immediately with cold water and an absorbent cloth, and consult a specialist restorer for periodic cleaning.
