Brian Shields 'Braaq' (1951–1997) Oil on Canvas

Later than 1960
Description

A charming winter street scene by the celebrated Northern artist Brian Shields, better known as 'Braaq', depicting figures making their way through snow-covered streets beneath softly falling snow. A Gothic church dominates the centre of the composition, whilst the warm glow from a single illuminated window provides a striking contrast against the muted winter palette.

Executed in the artist's distinctive naïve style, the painting is rich in atmospheric detail, from the heavily impasto snow to the bustling procession of figures crossing the icy street. Particularly engaging is the small child peering from behind the corner of the building, a playful detail reminiscent of the artist's fondness for including hidden characters and autobiographical references within his compositions, inviting the viewer to linger and explore the scene.

Signed 'Braaq Ann' lower right and presented in a contemporary moulded frame.

Brian Shields was one of the most recognisable Northern artists of the late twentieth century, renowned for his evocative depictions of industrial Britain and everyday life. Working under the name 'Braaq', his paintings are instantly recognisable for their characterful figures, snowy townscapes and nostalgic charm. The addition of 'Ann' to his signature was a tribute to his late sister, a feature found on many of his works.

Northern Industrial art focuses on depicting working-class urban scenes, mill towns, streetscapes, and weather conditions typical of Northern England during the mid-to-late 20th century, often featuring figurative elements against civic and industrial backdrops.

Traditional oil paintings consist of pigment bound with drying oils applied onto a stretched cotton or linen canvas, which is then secured within a timber or composite frame with protective backing.

Authentic works by Brian Shields often feature his distinct signature braaq or braaq ANN, characteristically muted grey and brown palettes, impasto textures, and figures depicted in winter attire within northern streetscapes.

Place the artwork as a focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard, pairing the dark and grey tones with neutral walls, dark wood accents, or brass fixtures to create balance.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and damp environments. Clean gentle surface dust using a dry, soft-bristled brush without applying water or chemical liquids.
