N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this Antique Mahogany Cased Barograph to the Victorian era.
DESCRIPTION:
This is a wonderful fine quality mahogany cased barograph by 'CHAS J.
The case is super quality having glass to all sides and the top and has a lovely feature of a chart drawer in which spare charts and other items can be stored. The case is made from mahogany which is a lovely colour and it finer quality having a nicely shaped frame around the glass.
The base plate of the barograph movement is signed 'CHAS J. GAUPP & CO HONGKONG & SINGAPORE'. The firm Chs. J. GAUPP and Co., were Chronometer Makers, Watchmakers, and Jewellers, Alexandra Buildings, Chater Road, Hong. The business was started in 1860 by Mr. C. J. Gaupp, from whom it passed five years thereafter into the hands of, Messrs. C. Hermann. P. E. Hermann, and O. Wagner. It was one of the most noteworthy concerns in Hong Kong. In their operative departments, which comprise the making and repairing of chronometers and all nautical instruments, Messrs. Chs. J. Gaupp and Co. turn out work of the highest order, and leave nothing undone to enhance process and result. The firm are agents for the British Admiralty Charts.
The barograph takes barometric measurements which in turn are recorded on a paper record sheet which is mounted on a clockwork revolving cylinder, the ink nib draws a line on the chart as the pressure rises and falls. The cylinder makes one full revolution in one week. The lid to the barograph drum is lifted to allow the clock to be wound via the integral key. The plate is stamped '7D'. This barograph has the added rare feature of a thermometer which has a temperature scale in Fahrenheit and Centigrade. The maker plaue is signed ''CHAS J. GAUPP & CO HONGKONG & SINGAPORE'
The barograph is in working order and has it's glass ink bottle. Free charts and free ink (which are not part of the sale) will be sent with the barograph.

The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are:
15 1/4 inches (39 cm) long.
9 1/2 inches (24 cm) deep.
9 inches (23 cm) high.
As you can see from these dimensions the barometer is of fantastic proportions.
CONDITION:
The barograph is in working order, it also has it's original ink bottle. The case is also in excellent condition, as can be seen from the photographs, just minor marks commensurate with age. There are also some fine scratched to the glass. Please study photographs carefully as they form part of the description and condition, as what you view is exactly what you will receive.
