Edgar Hunt (1876 - 1955) “Meal Time” a Charming Signed Oil Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

A delightful and highly characteristic oil painting by the celebrated British animal painter Edgar Hunt, depicting a lively group of farmyard birds gathered around a tipped metal pail spilling cabbage leaves onto the ground. At the centre of the composition a colourful cockerel and several hens peck eagerly at the scattered vegetables, accompanied by a pair of ducks, while another hen stands slightly apart observing the scene.

The birds are rendered with Hunt’s typical care and naturalism, each figure beautifully painted with richly coloured plumage and subtle tonal modelling. The rustic farmyard setting, with timber buildings behind and an open landscape glimpsed in the distance, provides a warm and atmospheric backdrop to the composition.

Signed E. Hunt and dated 1923 to the lower right, the title “Meal Time” appearing to the mount beneath.

Presented in a decorative moulded gilt frame which complements the warm palette of the painting.

A particularly attractive example of Edgar Hunt’s much admired farmyard scenes, a subject for which the artist became widely celebrated and which continues to be highly sought after by collectors today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The British animalier tradition gained prominence during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, specialising in the realistic representation of farm animals, poultry, and working dogs set within naturalistic rural environments.

Artists used oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen canvas or wood panels, typically housed within moulded gesso and giltwood frames with protective varnish coats.

Authentic period paintings display consistent surface craquelure, period-appropriate canvas or board aging on the reverse, hand-applied artist signatures, and original framing construction.

Display the artwork above a console table or sideboard alongside classic brass accents and natural timber furniture to accentuate traditional country house aesthetics.

Dust the frame and canvas surface lightly with a dry, soft-bristle brush, avoiding moisture, chemical cleansers, and direct exposure to intense sunlight or heat sources.
