Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. Recognised for its distinct palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and gilt embellishments, this style became widely collected across Europe from the seventeenth century onwards.

Ninteenth-century Imari chargers were crafted using high-fired porcelain clay. The cobalt blue decorative elements were painted directly onto the unglazed body before firing, after which overglaze enamel colours, iron-red enamels, and gold leaf gilding were applied and fired in a secondary low-temperature kiln.

Authentic nineteenth-century Imari pieces display characteristic spur marks on the base from kiln firing, slight natural imperfections in the porcelain body, and minor glaze irregularities. The palette typically features deep cobalt blue paired with rich, slightly raised iron-red enamels and hand-applied gilding.
