Heriz carpets originate from the Northwest region of Iran and are characterized by their bold, large-scale geometric designs, prominently featuring a grand central medallion, stepped spandrels, and multi-layered composite borders. Unlike curvilinear city carpets, Heriz weavers executed stylized angular foliage and floral motifs, resulting in a distinct graphic structure.

These carpets are hand-knotted using local wool spun onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool from the Mount Sabalan region is thick and resilient due to trace minerals in the water, woven with Turkish (symmetrical) knots to create a durable pile capable of withstanding heavy foot traffic.

Authentic pieces exhibit geometricized floral patterns rather than smooth rounded lines, along with a cotton foundation and heavy knotting. Natural vegetable dyes produce subtle colour variations, known as abrash, across the field, and the reverse side shows clear knot definition consistent with hand weaving.
