Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An oak coffer is a sturdy wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, traditionally constructed from solid oak panels. Widely produced from the medieval period through the 17th century and revived in later eras, coffers were designed to store linens, clothing, and household valuables.

Traditional coffers are constructed using solid timber, predominantly native oak, joined with mortise and tenon joints held by wooden dowels or pegs. The exterior surfaces frequently feature hand-carved relief decoration, such as lozenges, lunettes, or foliate motifs, topped with flat or panelled lids.

Authentic period coffers exhibit signs of historic hand-tooling, such as adze marks on unexposed surfaces, alongside hand-forged iron hinges or loop joints. Natural wood shrinkage over centuries often results in slight irregularities, gaps around joinery, and a rich, uneven patina built up from historic wax and handling.

A carved oak coffer functions effectively at the foot of a bed for bed linen storage, or positioned in an entryway to serve as both seating and shoe storage. Placing modern lamps, ceramics, or framed art above a coffer creates a balanced contrast between historical timber textures and contemporary decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timbers moisture and sheen. Keep the coffer away from direct heat sources and extreme fluctuations in humidity to prevent timber warping or splitting.
