1930s English Wingback Armchair in Mulberry Shetland Plaid Teal

1920 - 1940
Description

A good quality 1930s English wingback armchair, professionally and recently reupholstered in Mulberry Home Shetland Plaid wool fabric in Teal (FD344/R11). The chair retains its original beech frame with a traditional coil-sprung seat, turned hardwood legs and original metal cup castors probably put on 50/60's to heighten chair and ease of movement. During re upholstery, several earlier layers of upholstery were uncovered, confirming its age and traditional construction. The generous proportions, high winged back and deep sprung seat make this an exceptionally comfortable armchair, equally suited to a sitting room, library, study or bedroom. The Mulberry Shetland Plaid fabric is a premium Scottish-woven wool, chosen for its durability and timeless country house character. The chair has been professionally upholstered to a high standard and is ready for immediate use.

Other measurements : Seat height: 47 cm and Arm height: 56 cm, Seat Depth 56 cm

Condition: Excellent condition following professional re upholstery. The frame is solid, the traditional sprung seat is supportive and comfortable, and the chair is ready for use. There is minor age-related wear to the hardwood legs and original metal castors, consistent with its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late seventeenth century, the wingback armchair features high sides or wings designed to protect occupants from cold draughts and retain heat from open hearths.

Furniture from this period typically featured solid hardwood frames, coil spring seating systems, jute webbing, natural filling materials such as horsehair, and heavy wool or velvet upholstery fabrics.

Authentic vintage pieces exhibit solid wood frames constructed with mortise and tenon joinery, brass castors, hand-tied springs beneath the webbing, and natural wear to timber feet.

Position the chair alongside a contemporary floor lamp and a low timber side table to create a reading corner, or pair it with neutral textiles to highlight the fabric pattern.

Regularly vacuum the fabric using a soft brush attachment, treat spills immediately with a dry absorbent cloth without rubbing, and position the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
