Verre eglomise is an artistic technique where gold or silver leaf is applied to the reverse side of glass and meticulously etched or painted to create mirrored patterns, lettering, and decorative borders.

Craftsmen applied thin sheets of gold leaf to the back of clear glass panes using a gelatin size, followed by back-painting black enamel to outline text and protect the delicate gilding from atmospheric exposure.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle patination, gentle flaking or micro-crazing in the painted backing, natural variation in gold leaf leafing lines, and period-appropriate typography.
