Antique Large 18th C English Walnut Treen Tobacco Jar, C.1790

18th century
Description

A superb and unusually large late 18th century English figured walnut treen tobacco jar, dating to around 1790. Beautifully handtturned, this impressive oversized example is modelled in the form of a silver tankard from this period, giving it both elegance and strong visual appeal.

The exceptional quality of the turner's craftsmanship is evident in the crisp detailing and finely balanced proportions. The interior has been expertly hollowed to create a generous storage compartment, while the shallow lift off cover features a domed centre and raised finial for ease of handling.

Over more than two centuries, the walnut has matured to a wonderfully rich, warm colour with an outstanding natural patina, highlighting the beauty of the figured grain.

As is typical of treen objects of this age, the timber has naturally shrunk over time, leaving the jar and cover slightly oval. Consequently, the lid aligns and fits best in one particular position—a characteristic consistent with authentic period treen and reflective of its age.

A fine and decorative example of Georgian English treen, combining practical craftsmanship with elegant design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Treen literally translates to of a tree and refers to small domestic functional items turned or carved from wood prior to the widespread availability of cheap ceramics, glass, and metals.

Craftsmen selected dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, mahogany, lignum vitae, or fruitwoods, which allowed for precise lathe-turning and took a high polish.

Authentic pieces display subtle non-circular movement from wood shrinkage over centuries, faint hand-turning marks from early lathe work, natural handling wear to high points, and unvarnished aged interiors.

Style the vessel on a bookshelf, desk, or mantelpiece alongside contemporary books and textured objects to introduce warmth, history, and organic material contrast.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and occasionally applying a natural beeswax polish to maintain the timber patination.
