1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional antique Edwardian satinwood painted compactum wardrobe, dating from circa 1900, combining elegant craftsmanship, refined proportions and superb practicality in one outstanding piece of decorative furniture.

Constructed from beautifully figured satinwood, this magnificent cabinet features an impressive triple-section design incorporating a central glazed bookcase above three generous drawers, flanked by two full-height bow-fronted wardrobe compartments. The central astragal glazed doors open to adjustable shelving, whilst each wardrobe offers excellent hanging storage, making the cabinet equally suited to modern living as it was over a century ago.

The beautifully matched satinwood veneers display striking chevron figuring throughout, complemented by delicate crossbanding, finely executed marquetry and exquisite hand-painted decoration. The restrained architectural cornice, elegant oval glazing and sweeping bow-fronted doors perfectly capture the sophisticated design of the Edwardian period, whilst the mellow golden satinwood has developed a rich warmth and beautiful patina through decades of careful preservation.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A compactum wardrobe is a multi-functional storage cabinet originating in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, combining hanging cupboard space, drawers, and glazed or panelled shelves within a single unit.

Craftsmen used West Indian satinwood for its golden tone and figure, frequently incorporating tulipwood or rosewood crossbanding, hand-painted figural scenes, glass glazing, and cast brass drop handles.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, fine hand-painted detail with visible brushwork rather than printed transfers, solid wood drawer linings, and natural age-related oxidisation on the timber.

A large compactum serves as a focal storage piece in a primary bedroom, dressing room, or spacious hallway, pairing with neutral wall finishes and minimalist contemporary decor to highlight the timber figuration.

Dust regularly using a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing the cabinet in direct sunlight or beside radiators, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to preserve the finish.
