Pair of Late 19th Century French Walnut Chairs in the Louis Xiv Style

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome pair of late nineteenth-century French walnut chairs in the Louis XIV style. Each chair has a high rectangular back and upholstered seat, covered in a later tapestry fabric woven with broad leaves and berries in soft natural tones.

The walnut frames stand on characteristic os de mouton (mutton bone) legs, united by shaped and scrolled stretchers, reflecting the bold Baroque forms associated with seventeenth-century French furniture. The warm walnut colour contrasts attractively with the tapestry upholstery..

Comfortable and decorative, these versatile chairs would work well as occasional seating, hall chairs or bedroom chairs.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 115cm

Width: 56cm

Depth: 70cm

CONDITION

The chairs are in good, solid condition and present well overall. There are minor marks, knocks and scratches consistent with their age and use. The walnut frames are structurally sound, and the later tapestry upholstery is clean and in good order with only light signs of use. Overall, these are an attractive and well-preserved pair of French chairs ready for use.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Louis XIV style is characterised by grand scale, formal symmetry, and rigorous geometric balance. Seating typically features tall, rigid rectangular backs, heavy stretchers, and sculpted scroll legs often referred to as os de mouton.

Frames are predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut or oak, which lend themselves to detailed carving. Upholstery frequently utilises heavy woven tapestries, needlepoint, or rich velvets secured with brass studding.

19th-century revival pieces often exhibit more uniform machine-assisted woodworking on unexposed surfaces, standardized brass upholstery tacks, and clearer signs of Victorian-era joinery techniques compared to hand-planed 17th-century originals.

These structured side chairs work well as accent seating in entrance halls or placed on either side of a contemporary console table to create visual contrast between historical form and modern minimalism.

Timber frames should be periodically dusted and treated with high-grade beeswax polish. Tapestry upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and protection from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
