Dated 1915 - Eli Griffiths & Sons Birmingham Oil Lamp

1900 - 1920
Description

A brass oil lamp made by Eli Griffiths & Sons of Birmingham with their trade name on the outside dating it to 1915, this can be seen just underneath the sliding panel to access the oil lamp. The oil container is clearly marked Elis Griffiths & Sons Birmingham 1912.

The lamp is complete and despite the need for an adjustment with a foot, it is in good condition. There are signs of old lacquer on the brass particularly around the sides and the top but most has been removed through cleaning over the years.

The turned wooden handle is original and appears to once have been painted black.

The oil lantern measures 34cm in height without the handle upright, and the sides are 11cm x 13cm. It weighs 2.5kgs.

Postage and packing within the UK mainland only is included in the price and for remote areas or delivery abroad, please contact us for a delivery quote.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian brass oil lantern is a portable liquid-fuel lighting device manufactured during the early twentieth century. These lamps were designed for functional utility in maritime, railway, and industrial sectors, utilising a wick and oil reservoir housed inside a protective metal frame with glass panels.

Industrial oil lanterns were primarily constructed from heavy-gauge sheet brass or copper to resist corrosion, combined with glass panels to shield the flame. Features often included turned wooden handles for heat resistance and internal iron or brass burner mechanisms.

Authentic pieces frequently display stamped manufacturer markings, location of manufacture, and date stamps impressed directly into the metal. Original construction evidence includes soldered or riveted seams, hand-turned wooden components, and natural surface oxidisation.

A brass oil lantern adds historical detail when displayed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table alongside contemporary decor. Its reflective metal surface provides texture in industrial, rustic, or traditional interior design schemes.

Maintain brass oil lanterns by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth. To preserve aged patina, avoid abrasive chemical polishes, and clean glass panels using a mild glass cleaner applied with a microfibre cloth.
