Victorian Leather Double Hat Box

19th century
Description

A good example of a Victorian leather hat box designed to hold two top hats. The outer of the box is covered in a rich brown leather with a leather carrying handle and brass lock plate. It has a lovely selection of original travel labels on the top including P&O and Southern Railway.

Inside, the case is lined with white cotton and purple silk covered fittings with elasticated straps for securing the hats. It has a top section for the first hat which lifts out and a further section below for hat number two.

The leather strap is embossed with the retailers name "Hiekel Jn. 18 & 20 Rue Tronchet Paris Londres". Hiekel Jeune was a historically prominent English hatmaker and bespoke milliner located at 18-20 rue Tronchet in Paris during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The case is in good condition and has a lovely aged patina with just the right amount of wear to show that it has been used but well cared for. There are of course some minor scuffs and marks but nothing detrimental and the interior is generally clean and tidy. We do not have a key and the leather strap that would go all the way around the outside is not intact and has worn through at the back. It has been cleaned and lightly polished and is a lovely decorative piece with a great history.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, rigid leather hat boxes were designed to transport formal headwear, such as silk top hats and bowlers, protecting them from damage during transit by steamship, train, or carriage.

They were typically crafted from thick hide stretched over a rigid mould, reinforced with heavy saddle stitching, brass rivets, metal lock plates, and leather straps for secure transport.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural age-related patination, heavy hand-stitched seams, period brass hardware with stamped maker or lock details, and sometimes original paper travel labels or textile linings.

These decorative containers function well displayed individually on shelving, placed atop a sideboard, or stacked with other vintage luggage in living spaces or hallways.

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and periodic conditioning with specialized leather balsam to maintain flexibility without altering the natural patina.
