Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An ebonised overmantle mirror is a wide, horizontally proportioned wall mirror designed to fit above a fireplace mantelpiece. Originating in the 19th century, these frames were crafted from hardwood stained dark to resemble exotic ebony wood, often highlighted with gold leaf detailing.

These mirrors were constructed using native softwoods or hardwoods such as pine, beech, or oak, which were dyed or lacquered black. The metallic highlights were applied using water gilding with gold leaf, while the mirror plate comprised silvered plate glass, frequently finished with a bevelled edge.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age on the reverse, such as original pine backing boards and iron fixings. The ebonised surface may exhibit micro-crazing or natural wear where the underlying timber shows through, and genuine mercury or early silvered glass often exhibits minor oxidisation or foxing.

Position the mirror directly above a living room hearth or position it atop a dining room sideboard to anchor the space. The stark black and gold colour scheme provides a strong focal point that bridges traditional period features and contemporary monochrome decor.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry feather duster or microfiber cloth to prevent lifting fragile gilding. Avoid using liquid chemical spray cleaners or water on the ebonised wood and gold leaf, applying specialised glass cleaner strictly to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate.
