Jacobean Style Oak Dresser Base

1900 - 1920
Description

A substantial Jacobean style oak dresser base of exceptional quality, dating from the early 20th century. Beautifully crafted in solid oak, the piece displays bold period-inspired styling with finely turned baluster supports, moulded details and rich, warm patination throughout. Its generous proportions and practical design make it an ideal addition to a dining room, kitchen or hallway.

The moulded rectangular top sits above an arrangement of three dovetailed drawers, each fitted with decorative brass drop handles on pierced backplates. The drawers are separated by moulded uprights, while a finely carved dentil moulding beneath the top enhances the classical Jacobean character. Below, the dresser is supported by eight finely turned baluster legs, united by a full-length potboard undertier, creating an imposing architectural appearance while providing excellent strength and stability.

Constructed in solid oak throughout, the dresser base has a deep, mellow colour and attractive grain, complemented by a durable finish that is well suited to everyday use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jacobean furniture style, originating during the reign of King James I in the 17th century, is characterised by sturdy oak construction, dark finishes, rectangular silhouettes, and decorative turned legs or geometric panelling.

Traditional Jacobean dresser bases were primarily crafted from solid English oak, joined using mortise and tenon woodworking methods, and completed with hand-turned legs and cast iron or brass hardware.

Authentic period construction is indicated by hand-hewn timber marks, irregular peg joints, hand-dovetailed or wooden-pegged drawers, and natural patination along areas of frequent handling.

A dark oak dresser base creates a grounding anchor in entryways or dining areas when contrasted with neutral wall finishes, contemporary framed artwork, or minimal ceramic vessels.

Maintain dark oak by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish occasionally, while avoiding direct heat sources and excessive humidity fluctuations.
