A mid Victorian 19th century Whisky glass tumbler dating to c1860. It has thick tapered walls with a deceptive bowl and a solid section at the base. Large polished pontil.
Historical Context
Plain tumblers such as this were used primarily for spirits such as whisky, as well as water or beer. The thick walls and heavy base provided stability and durability, making them well suited to everyday use, while also helping to prevent the contents from warming too quickly in the hand.
They were intended for informal drinking in domestic settings and taverns, rather than for formal table service.
