Royal Worcester Painted Fruit Cabinet Plate by Richard Sebright, 1936

Description

Produced by the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company in 1936, this outstanding cabinet plate is signed by the celebrated fruit painter Richard Sebright, whose work represents the highest achievement of Royal Worcester's Painted Fruit tradition.

Richard Sebright (1870-1959) is officially regarded as the greatest fruit painter in the history of Royal Worcester. During more than fifty years at the factory he perfected the art of porcelain fruit painting through exceptional realism, subtle colour transitions and remarkable technical precision. His signed works are regarded as museum-quality pieces and continue to achieve record prices at major international auctions.

The finely executed still life depicts two ripe apples accompanied by several blackberries and delicate wild flowers. A deep cobalt-blue ground surrounds the painting, richly ornamented with burnished hand-applied gold decoration and elaborate raised jewelled gilding created from numerous individually applied gold enamel beads, a feature associated with Royal Worcester's finest cabinet porcelain.

Royal Worcester was awarded the Grand Prix at both the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, reflecting the international standing enjoyed by the manufactory during this period.

The underside bears the authentic puce Royal Worcester factory mark incorporating the date code for 1936 together with factory technological marks.

Condition:

Excellent antique condition with complete preservation of the gilding, enamels and painted decoration. Examined under ultraviolet light with no restoration or repairs detected.

Royal Worcester began producing hand-painted fruit porcelain studies in the late nineteenth century, a tradition that became one of the factorys signature offerings throughout the twentieth century. Skilled artists specialized in specific motifs, creating fruit compositions framed by intricate gilding and rich border colours.

These decorative plates were crafted from bone china, decorated with hand-applied enamel paints for the central artwork, and detailed with raised gold gilding applied using burnishing tools to create texture and reflective depth.

Authentic pieces feature the printed Royal Worcester factory stamp on the reverse, often accompanied by date codes consisting of dots or numbers, along with the visible painted signature of the individual artist within the fruit study.
