Rare Spode Felspar Porcelain Covered Pedestal Bowl with Butterfly Handles, C.1821

18th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A rare English porcelain covered pedestal bowl produced by the Spode factory in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, circa 1821.

Manufactured in Spode's Felspar Porcelain, introduced by Josiah Spode II in 1821, the piece represents one of the factory's earliest feldspathic porcelain productions. Spode's reputation was firmly established after the royal visit of the Prince of Wales in 1806, which led to Josiah Spode II receiving the appointment of Potter and English Porcelain Manufacturer to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales.

The elegant form is distinguished by exceptionally rare butterfly handles and a matching butterfly finial, both original handles surviving intact. The cover retains its original factory-made ladle notch.

Decorated in the Chinoiserie taste, the bowl features hand-painted Chinese figures, flowering trees and garden landscapes on a pale green ground. The interior is fully decorated with a central medallion depicting a child holding flowers, while the rims are finished with period gold leaf gilding.

The underside bears the printed grey floral wreath backstamp reading Spode Felspar Porcelain. Rarely encountered on the market, examples of this model are highly sought after by collectors of early English porcelain.

Dimensions:

• Weight 600 g. Height 14.8 cm. Width across handles 20 cm. Diameter 15 cm

Condition:

Excellent antique condition. Very minor wear to the gilding on one small area of the cover rim. Otherwise free from chips, cracks or restorations. Examined under UV light.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in 1821 by Josiah Spode II, Felspar porcelain incorporated feldspar into the ceramic body, creating a refined, translucent material decorated with hand-painted enamels and intricate gilding.

These vessels were crafted using bone china or feldspathic porcelain formulas, with separately hand-modelled handles, bases, and finials attached before firing, glazing, and polychrome enamelling.

Genuine pieces frequently feature period makers marks stamped or painted on the underside, smooth felspar glazing, finely detailed hand-painted scenes, and distinctive relief-moulded features.

Position the vessel as a focal accent on a sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantelpiece, allowing its classical proportions and detailed painting to contrast with clean modern surfaces.

Clean gently with lukewarm water and mild liquid soap using a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive sponges or immersion that could degrade overglaze enamels and gilding.
