Georgian Walnut Dresser Sideboard with Earlier Walnut Panel C. 1820

19th century
Description

A most attractive late Georgian walnut sideboard with two drawers over turned and pegged legs united by finely turned stretchers and inset with a central solid walnut carved panel which dates from the early 1600s.

The sideboard is principally early 19th century but with this earlier carved panel intentionally incorporated and set with pegged tenons into the frame.

Heavy and robust, with a good warm colour and fielded finished back panels – allowing it to be set in the centre of a room and viewed from all sides if required.

The brass drop handles are original, drawer linings are oak.

There is a smattering of old worm holes to the carved panel, some old worm tracks and losses to the bottom of the back feet and here and there to the stretchers – all long since treated and dead and not affecting structure.

The sideboard / dresser is solid, heavy and very robust, the drawers open and close smoothly.

The stretchers and legs have been very carefully turned and each section matches its partner yet contains different elements, displaying the turners skills at creating bobbins, reels, vases and cups from a single post of solid timber.

The top with twin walnut boards and hand carved shaped border with some fading.

Very beautiful and practical with small bruises, scuffs and dings consistent with age and caring use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian dresser base is a long, shallow piece of storage furniture produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, originally designed to sit below open shelving or operate as a standalone serving table in dining rooms and kitchens.

Georgian dressers were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, turned timber legs, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian walnut pieces display hand-cut joinery, asymmetrical drawer linings, evidence of hand-planing on unseen rear surfaces, and natural wear patterns around handles and foot stretchers.

Position the dresser base in a hallway or dining space, pairing its dark timber tones with modern artwork, neutral ceramic vessels, or a contemporary table lamp to balance historical and modern design elements.

Maintain the surface finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight, central heating sources, and chemical cleaners.
