An attractive Russian papier-mâché lacquer cigarette case attributed to the celebrated Vishnyakov workshop and dating to the mid-19th century. The lid is decorated with a finely painted Russian Winter Troika executed in the traditional over-the-gold technique (pismo po skvoznomu), in which transparent oil paints were applied over gold leaf to create a distinctive luminous effect. The animated composition, expressive horses and confident brushwork reflect the finest traditions of Russian lacquer miniature painting.The book-form case is fitted with a substantial recessed brass piano hinge, illustrating the high standard of craftsmanship associated with quality Russian lacquer work. The principal miniature is preserved in exceptional condition with remarkable retention of the original lacquer and gilding.
