Chinese Canton Painted Enamel-on-copper Bowl, Guangxu Period, C.1885-1905

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A fine antique Chinese Canton enamel-on-copper bowl dating to the Guangxu period of the late Qing Dynasty, circa 1885–1905. The scalloped body is entirely hand-painted in the distinctive Famille Noire style with a dense, continuous Millefleurs design of peonies, chrysanthemums and lilies, demonstrating the refined decorative taste of late nineteenth-century Canton export enamels.

The contrasting white enamel interior is decorated with the traditional Three Abundances (Sanduo) motif of a pomegranate, peach and Buddha's Hand citron, symbols of fertility, longevity and prosperity in Chinese culture. The composition is enclosed by an elegant red-and-gold geometric diaper border.

Produced by firing successive vitreous enamel layers onto a hand-hammered copper body, this unmarked bowl displays the quality and craftsmanship associated with Canton workshops supplying luxury goods for the European export market. The light patina, gentle discolouration and small firing pits are characteristic features of authentic nineteenth-century hand-crafted enamels and contribute to its originality. Well-preserved Canton painted enamels with richly executed Millefleurs decoration continue to enjoy strong demand among collectors of Chinese export art.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Canton painted enamel, historically known as yangcai or foreign enamel, is an artisan technique developed in Guangzhou during the Qing dynasty where vitreous enamels were painted onto copper forms and fired in kilns.

Craftsmen shaped thin copper sheets by hand, applied an opaque enamel ground layer, painted detailed designs using mineral pigments, and finished the edges with gilt trims prior to final firing.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces display delicate hand painting, slight surface irregularities or pinholes in the glaze, aged gilding along the rims, and natural copper oxidisation at exposed foot rings.

Place the bowl as a decorative centerpiece on a sideboard top, coffee table, or open shelving to introduce intricate pattern and historic craftsmanship into modern or eclectic room schemes.

Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid water immersion or harsh liquid cleaners that can penetrate micro-fractures, and handle the vessel from the base to prevent stress on enamel surfaces.
