19th Century Apprentice Piece Miniature Pedestal Table

19th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

An apprentice piece miniature table

Pedestal table of circular form with folding top inlaid with twelve sections of veneers, supported on a turned column to platform base, veneered in similar fashion to the top. Stands upon bun feet.

English, circa 1840–1900

Apprentice pieces like this were made by apprentices in workshops to practice and demonstrate their skill, like this piece they are a little less refined than workshop salesman's miniatures - which would have been made by cabinet makers for the salesmen to take to show to clients the designs available without having to carry full sized pieces of furniture. Apprentice pieces have both the naivety of a skill being honed and the charm of a miniature.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An apprentice piece is a scaled-down model of a full-sized furniture design, crafted by a cabinetmaking trainee to demonstrate technical mastery before gaining master craftsman status.

Master craftsmen and apprentices utilised fine cabinet woods including mahogany, walnut, rosewood, and oak, frequently incorporating intricate parquetry or marquetry veneers to display precision joinery.

Authentic period examples demonstrate scaled hand-cut joinery, era-appropriate timber oxidisation, natural surface patina, and working mechanical features such as tilt-top latches or micro dovetails.

These compact decorative objects work exceptionally well curated on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or styled alongside books and desk accessories inside a traditional display cabinet.

Dust gently using a soft microfibre cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish sparingly while avoiding high humidity and direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting.
