Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 19th-century French giltwood mirrors feature carved wooden frames coated in gesso and finished with genuine gold leaf. They frequently incorporate classical, Rococo, or Louis XV design motifs such as floral sprays, gadrooning, and ornate corner cartouches.

These frames were constructed from carved softwoods, coated with layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and hide glue sizeand finished with red or yellow bole clay before gold leaf application. Water gilding or oil gilding techniques were used to secure the gold foil to the frame.

Authentic pieces show natural wear revealing the underlying red bole clay or white gesso, known as rubbing. Additionally, glass plates from this era may exhibit light foxing, dark spots, or slight distortion due to historic manufacturing methods and age-related oxidisation.

Positioning a gilt mirror above a clean-lined modern console table or fireplace hearth creates a structured contrast between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary architecture. Hanging the mirror opposite a window maximises natural light reflection throughout the space.

Dust the frame gently using a soft feather duster or dry microfibre cloth without liquid cleaning products, as water can dissolve historic water gilding. Glass cleaner should be applied sparingly to a microfibre cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the mirror surface.
