Chinese Double Sided Silk Embroidery on Rotating Hardwood Display Stand, C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

An outstanding example of early 20th century Chinese silk embroidery, this remarkable circular needlework showcases the extraordinary skill of the embroiderer. Executed in the highly prized double sided embroidery technique, both the front and reverse are identical in their intricate detail and flawless finish—a rare achievement that distinguishes it from the vast majority of embroidered works, which typically reveal knots and unfinished stitching on the reverse.

Worked on fine translucent silk, the vibrant composition depicts a graceful pair of exotic cranes amidst richly coloured peony blooms, with fruit hanging from an overhanging tree branch. Every stitch demonstrates exceptional precision, creating a beautifully balanced scene that appears almost weightless within its silk ground.

Recognising the quality of the embroidery, it has been preserved in its original carved and pierced hardwood rotating display stand, itself a work of art. The stand allows the embroidery to be admired from either side, celebrating the unique double-sided craftsmanship. Constructed in multiple sections with traditional sliding pegged joints, the stand reflects the high standard of Chinese cabinetmaking and is a true indicator of quality.

The hardwood has developed a warm, mellow patina over time, with one side displaying a softer faded tone and the other a slightly richer colour, the result of years of natural sunlight exposure. This gentle ageing only enhances its authenticity and character.

A rare and highly decorative example of Chinese textile artistry, combining exceptional craftsmanship with elegant presentation.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chinese double-sided silk table screen is a decorative desktop partition consisting of fine silk needlework mounted within a rotating carved wooden frame. Produced using double-sided embroidery techniques, the image appears identical on both sides without visible knots or thread ends.

These items are constructed using silk thread woven onto transparent silk gauze or satin, set within frames crafted from dark hardwoods such as rosewood, zitan, or teak. The stands feature pierced carved detailing and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Authentic double-sided embroidery exhibits fine hand-stitching with split silk threads where stitch directions vary to catch light. Hardwood stands from this period display hand-carved reticulated details, subtle patination in recessed areas, and joinery constructed without modern metal screws.

A table screen serves as a focal accent on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece, particularly when backlighting highlights the translucency of the silk. Placing the dark carved timber against a neutral backdrop highlights the detailed needlework.

Position silk embroidery away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fibre degradation and colour fading. Dust the wooden stand using a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaning agents near the silk pane.
