Antique Tacheh, Lori-bakhtiari Nomads, The Chahar Mahal, Western Persia.
£1,450 $1,957 €1,693
The ''tacheh'' or ''khour'' was a bag for containing wheat and this very old example from circa 1890-1900 has beenn opened-up to show the archaic form of weaving comprising natural undyed ivory wool plainweave on the left side with soumak and knotted-pile on the base and on the right side, narrow, verical columns in overlay/underlay brocading.
Opened up like this, shows how the tacheh was made on the loom, after which it was sewn up on both sides and base with goat-hair, leaving the top open into which the wheat was poured (see photos attached).
My feeling is that the tacheh symbolised on the left side, the bare earth and on the right side, the wheat growing out of the earth. The knotted-pile, bottle-shape, central section symbolises the wheat being poured into the container.
This is a remarkable example of an archaic wheat-sack; a weaving that disappeared from nomadic life around the early 20th century and replaced by western plastic and gunny sacks which began to appear in t...he bazaars of Iran around that time. These sacks are a rare find these days.
