Japanese Patinated Iron Plaque with Gold & Silver Inlay, Circa 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional example of early 20th century Japanese metalwork, this finely crafted circular plaque is executed in matte patinated iron and showcases the remarkable artistry for which Japanese craftsmen are renowned.

The surface has been meticulously hand chased with a striking naturalistic composition depicting a gnarled pine branch adorned with delicately rendered pine needles. Perched within an open section of the design is a majestic eagle poised to take flight in pursuit of two small birds, creating a scene full of movement and dramatic tension.

The exquisitely detailed decoration is enriched with luxurious inlays of pure gold and silver. At the same time, intricate hand engraving further enhances the precious metal highlights, adding exceptional depth, texture, and visual contrast.

The plaque bears the artist's signature in Japanese characters, inlaid in silver on the lower left, and is elevated on three elegantly shaped feet, allowing it to be displayed as intended.

A superb collector's piece, this work exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and sophisticated decorative techniques of the Taishō period, combining artistic excellence with outstanding attention to detail.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Meiji and early Taisho periods, Japanese metalworkers adapted traditional sword-fitting decoration techniques, such as damascening or nunome-zogan, to create decorative domestic objects like iron plaques, vases, and dishes decorated with fine gold and silver inlay for display.

These pieces are typically constructed from wrought or cast iron that has been chemically patinated or oxidised to achieve a uniform dark finish. Pure gold and silver wires or foils are then hammered into finely cross-hatched surface grooves to form intricate artistic motifs.

Authentic historical metalwork exhibits precise undercut hatching where the precious metals are embedded seamlessly into the iron base without adhesives. Look for crisp artist signatures carved into the surface, smooth patination, and detailed craftsmanship across the inlay.

Display the plaque on an easel placed on a library bookshelf, console table, or mantelpiece alongside contrasting textures like matte ceramics and polished wood. Placing it near soft directional lighting highlights the subtle contrast between the dark patinated iron and precious metal inlay.

Dust the item gently using a clean, soft dry brush or microfibre cloth to clean intricate relief details. Avoid water, harsh chemical polishers, and abrasive liquids that can strip the dark protective iron oxide patina or loosen delicate gold and silver inlay.
