English Miniature Satinwood Serpentine Chest of Drawers by A. F. Lloyd, Bideford, Dated 1907

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional example of English miniature cabinetmaking, this exquisite serpentine chest of drawers is fully signed and dated in pencil inside the top drawer: "A. F. Lloyd, Bideford, 1907." Crafted with remarkable precision, it faithfully reproduces the form and proportions of an elegant 18th century serpentine chest on a reduced scale.

The carcase and drawers are constructed in mahogany, while the exterior is veneered in the finest West African satinwood, showcasing the cabinetmaker's extraordinary attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Standing on elegant canted bracket feet with vertical tulipwood banding, the chest features four graduated drawers, each fully lined in mahogany and assembled with finely hand cut dovetail joints. Every drawer is fitted with handmade square ebony knobs, perfectly scaled to complement the refined design.

The sides are beautifully decorated with large oval burr satinwood centre panels, framed by quarter-veneered fields and bordered with tulipwood banding separated by delicate boxwood stringing, creating a striking visual contrast.

The top is equally impressive, displaying a beautifully figured satinwood veneer centred with an intricate marquetry shell within an oval panel. Matching tulipwood banding and fine boxwood stringing continue around the moulded edge, completing this outstanding composition.

Pieces of this calibre are exceptionally rare. Combining masterful craftsmanship, premium materials, and a documented maker, this is one of the finest examples of English miniature furniture we have encountered. It would make a distinguished addition to any serious collection of miniature furniture or fine English antiques.

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Miniature chests were frequently created in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as apprentice pieces to demonstrate cabinetmaking skill, or as salesman samples used to market full-sized furniture to prospective clients.

Cabinetmakers employed high-grade timber veneers such as satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood, often accented with ebony stringing, satinwood crossbanding, and decorative marquetry or parquetry inlays.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct timber oxidisation, natural wear on the drawer runners, and scaled drawer knobs secured with original wood or metal fastenings.

A miniature chest serves as an effective decorative object when placed on a sideboard, desk, or bookshelf to store small items such as keys, jewellery, or stationery.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically using a soft cloth to maintain the finish and protect the timber surface.
