Antique Victorian Mahogany Freestanding Cheval Dressing Mirror

19th century
Description

An antique Victorian mahogany freestanding cheval mirror with a large adjustable rectangular plate, turned supports and an elegant stretchered base.

This quality antique mirror has a substantial mahogany frame with softly rounded upper corners. The large mirror plate is suspended between two finely turned upright supports and can be tilted to achieve the desired viewing angle.

Each upright is surmounted by a decorative turned finial and fitted with a large circular adjustment knob. The supports are joined by a pair of turned stretchers, giving the frame both strength and an attractive balanced appearance.

The mirror stands on four shaped splayed legs terminating in small castors, allowing it to be moved more easily. Its generous proportions make it ideal as a full-length dressing mirror within a bedroom, dressing room or hallway.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror, originating in the late eighteenth century and widely produced during the Victorian era, is a full-length dressing mirror mounted on a dual-upright frame that allows the glass to tilt.

Victorian cheval mirrors were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, accompanied by brass friction knobs and silvered or mercury glass.

Authentic pieces feature hand-turned upright supports, original brass thumb screws, dovetailed frame joinery, and natural signs of age such as slight oxidisation or foxing on the mirror backing.

Place the mirror in an empty corner or beside a window to maximise natural light while creating visual depth, pairing dark timber frames with neutral wall tones and simple modern textiles.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a soft cloth and applying beeswax sparingly along the grain, while cleaning the glass with a non-ammoniated solution to preserve the silvering.
