Victorian Domed Leather Trunk with Brass Studwork, by Arthur Wannop

19th century
For Sale by Tinker & Toad
Description

A wonderful domed-top travel trunk, probably late 19th to early 20th century, in the Victorian vernacular saddler tradition. A wood carcass is bound in tan leather with black metal strapwork and corner patches, all secured with domed brass studs that form decorative borders and heart motifs to the front, and the initials J+H to the lid. Iron drop handles are fitted to the sides and an iron lock plate sits beneath the front hasp. Inside, the trunk retains its original decorative paper lining together with a printed maker’s label reading “Arthur Wannop, Saddler, Trunk & Harness Maker, Brampton,” as photographed. The generous scale and domed profile give useful storage and strong visual presence; ideal as a hallway blanket box, end-of-bed chest or log box. Age-related wear to the leather and mounts lends an attractive, honest patina consistent with travel and long service.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian domed leather trunk is a nineteenth-century travel chest featuring a curved lid designed to shed water and prevent other luggage from being piled on top. These trunks were commonly built with a wooden core covered in hide or tanned leather and reinforced with brass studs and metal corner plates.

These trunks typically feature an internal softwood framework, such as pine, covered in natural hide or leather. Structural reinforcement and decoration were provided by iron corner brackets, brass nailhead studs, and heavy iron or brass lock mechanisms.

Authentic period trunks exhibit age-consistent wear to the leather surface, natural patination or mild oxidisation on brass studs, and hand-cut or slightly irregular iron fittings. Maker brass plates, stamped lock assemblies, and hand-studded monograms or heart motifs also help verify authenticity.

Position the trunk against a wall or in a living space as a focal storage piece, combining warm tan tones with clean modern lines. Placing neutral textiles nearby balances the dark iron fittings and detailed brass studwork.

Keep leather trunks away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent the hide from drying and cracking. Dust metal fittings lightly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a dedicated leather conservator balm sparingly to keep the surface supple.
