Victorian Mahogany Cane Desk Chair

19th century
Description

A lovely mahogany library chair dating from the late 19th Century. It is a good comfortable chair and very well made with a cane seat. It has an attractive shape with a curving back supported by nicely shaped splats and two scrolling arms. It stands on bulbous turned legs joined by turned stretchers. It makes a lovely desk chair but would also be a nice library or hall chair.

It comes with a shaped feather filled cushion to fit the seat and the arms have been upholstered in matching fabric. The rear of the seat is stamped with the maker's initials RR.

The chair is approximately 31" (79cm) high and the arms are 25 1/4" (64cm) wide. The seat is 20" (51cm) deep and approximately 17" (43cm) high.

It is in good condition for its age and it has developed a lovely patina with a rich colour. There are signs of age and use and it is not without a few small marks here and there but nothing detrimental or untoward. There have been a few small repairs here and there but it is strong and sturdy. The cane is in good order and the chair has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian mahogany desk chair is a nineteenth-century office or library seat constructed from solid mahogany, designed for daily study use. Key characteristics include curved crest rails, turned legs, pierced back splats, and frequently woven cane seats or leather upholstery.

These chairs were manufactured using solid mahogany frameworks, hand-carved pierced splats, and mortise-and-tenon joinery. Seats often utilised woven rattan cane, while lower legs incorporated brass castors with porcelain or brass wheels for smooth movement across floors.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery marks, genuine age-related patination on the timber, original brass castors secured with screws, and hand-woven cane work showing slight inconsistencies typical of handcrafting rather than modern machine production.

Position the chair beside a streamlined modern writing desk or place it in a reading corner to introduce rich wood tones and historical texture into contemporary, minimalist, or eclectic rooms.

Apply a natural beeswax polish along the mahogany grain once or twice a year to preserve the wood hydration. Keep the woven cane seat clean with a soft brush and lightly moisten the underside with a damp cloth annually to prevent the fibres from becoming brittle.
