C. 1820. Bronze, Eagle's Claw Oil Lamp with Bust of a Satyr - Italian

19th century
Description

Circa. 1820, Patinated Bronze, Eagle''s Claw with the Bust of a Satyr (Italian).

Rare oil lamp in patinated bronze in the shape of eagle''s claws with naturalistic molding, bearing the bust of a satyr on a baluster column, after Severo Calzetta da Ravenna (1465 - 1543). The back of the head can be opened and filled with oil, the mouth with the tongue out contains a tube for the wick.

Severo Calzetta da Ravenna, nicknamed the Master of Dragons, worked between Ravenna, Ferrara and Padua between the end of the 15th century and the middle of the 16th century. A certain number of bronze objects preserved in different museums around the world are attributed to him.

The resumption of the creations of Severo Calzetta da Ravenna in the 18th and 19th centuries is part of the tradition of the Grand Tour: these were objects intended for enlightened amateurs. The concept of the School of Padua is often attached to it.

An identical model is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, these lamps were inspired by Classical Roman and Greek antiquities discovered in archaeological digs, featuring mythological figures like satyrs alongside zoomorphic motifs such as bird claws.

These pieces were cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand casting methods, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface detail and the application of chemical patinas to achieve rich tonal depth.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-tooled chased decoration, natural wear to raised edges, historical patination or oxidisation, and period-appropriate assembly methods such as hand-cut threads.

Position the item on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table alongside dark timber furniture or architectural books to support a dark academia or gentlemans library aesthetic.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleansers, harsh chemicals, or abrasive polishes that remove natural patination.
